World Championships Update Five: Mens Quarter-Finals and Squirt Semi-finals

The atmosphere on Wednesday night was absolutely electric, after kicking off the day with the first heats at 7am and getting Mens K1, Junior Mens k1, Junior womens K1 and OC1 prelims all done in one day everyone was tired but excited to see the mens quarter finals where twenty five men would be cut to ten.  The first heat was around 8 o’clock and spectators were treated to warm(ish) weather and a glorious red sunset.

The Competition was a thrilling watch with everyone pulling out their big guns, big tricks and big rides.  Despite worsening weather conditions supporters still lined the banks to cheer on their countries competitors, or in some cases another countries competitors if their nation had not made it to this stage.    I was of course cheering on all five of the GB mens quarter finalists, Alan Ward, Sam Anderson, Joe Bradley, James Weight and of course James ‘Pringle’ Bebbington.  Team Germany could also be heard pretty loudly with local hero Martin Koll being a particular favourite.  Everyone paddled well and in the end two GB athletes made it through to the semi-finals, James weight and James ‘Pringle’ Bebbington.

The Mens Quarter finals finished late and then a ‘losers’ party got into full swing, sadly for me I had to duck out early to get a good rest before the squirt semi finals.

When I woke up I felt pretty good and by the time my heat came around I felt really good about what I was going to do.  Everyone paddled really well and the competition was really stiff, and in the end although I thought I had a strong first ride it wasn’t enough for me to get through to the finals and I finished in eighth place.  Congratulations to all those that went through and stay tuned to the live stream on saturday to see the finals for every category.
